Protecting your Brand – Copyright issues at SXSW Panel

by Todd Lucier on March 24, 2009

Ever wonder how to respond when things you have posted on the Internet have shown up in other places without your permission? This panel explored how to encourage those who are abusing your content to stop and what constitutes fair reuse of content.

The short synopsis of protecting your brand, without being a jerk:

  1. Start by politely asking the offending party to stop reusing your content
  2. Consider ways to make the use of your content profitable for yourself and the offending party – they may actually be doing you a favor.
  3. Formal communications including filing for a takedown notice and getting lawyers involved should only be used as a last resort.

Panelists for How to Protect your Brand without being a Jerk:

  • Oren Bitan (HIQI Media)
  • Twanna Hines (@funkybrownchick)
  • Danny O’Brien (EFF)
  • Elena Paul, Esq (Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts)
  • Eric Steuer (creative commons)
