Graham Ketcheson January 20, 2009 at 8:51 am: Is it still best to have a blog hosted by third party software like Wordpress or is it ok to set up a blog within your own site – with comments, archival settings just like Wordpress, etc. – ?

It’s best to have a blog that you host on your servers so that the link juice flows to your domain.
Wordpress.com sites can be hosted on a domain that you name.
Wordpress.org is a blogging platform that you can set up on your own hosted domain. Although it involves some ftp and database setup, it’s really not to difficult to get going.

Wordpress is open source and is always evolving. One of the benefits of using it, you’ll always have the best available blogging platform.
The other things are:
thousands of plug-ins to customize your site
seo built right into the platform
lots of free advice online, because so many people use wordpress.

If I was making a suggestion to a business as savvy as WhiteSquall, I’d suggest installing wordpress on your server and using it. It’s also pretty easy to import other blog posts into Wordpress, as I did with this and other blogs moving them in from hosted Blogger.com blogs.

At the end of the day, your blog may suit your needs just fine, but if you want to be future ready – I’d suggest making the switch.
