Following up on a recent keyword post, spend 15 minutes today making sure your Keyword Density is where it should be. Keyword Density is expressed as a percentage of times a word or phrase appears among the text elements of a page. How often you use keywords is a critical element of search engine optimization.
How often should you use your keyword phrase on a page?
It depends on how often others that are successfully targetting this keyword and making it to the first page of search results are using the keyword phrase? The ideal density varies from industry to industry, phrase to phrase. To find out what density you should aim for, take the top 10 or 20 search results and see what percentage those sites are using with a tool like http://www.keyworddensity.com and compare their results to yours. Adjust the keyword density of your content accordingly.
Another valuable strategy is to use synonyms for your target keyword phrase. The best way to find synonyms is to use Google’s “~ trick”. By typing a “~” (tilde) in front of your keyword phrase in a Google search. Google will return search results with Bold text for all similar words and phrases. See the sample below where Google reports that the words Accommodation are similar to bed and breakfast and vacation rental.
